Cost of Living

Report: Cost of Living Report - University of Exeter Data.pdf

We teamed up with the Russell Group’s Student Unions to better understand the impact that the cost of living crisis is having on students. The findings revealed that 95% of students at the University of Exeter were concerned about the cost of living crisis and 1 in 5 students have considered dropping out of university because of the cost of living crisis. Some of the actions the Guild has been focusing on are:

Increase the availability of paid work opportunities and advertise them widely.
Lobby for measures that prevent rent increases and reduce the cost of student accommodation.
Provide cheaper on-campus outlets that are open 24/7 to accommodate the times when students are studying on campus.
Raise awareness of and signpost students to hardship funds and financial support.
Challenge the stigma around asking for financial support.

International students make up a quarter of the University of Exeter’s student population and this research project was conducted to explore their experiences. The findings revealed that students have had positive experiences of feeling safe in Exeter, having clear routes to access support, enjoying events and activities, and being part of a supportive University community. However, there are also some areas that need improvement such as practical support, meeting people, and academic experiences.

Survey Superheroes

Become a Superhero and get paid to tell us your opinions! 

Our Survey Superheroes give their opinions and share their experiences on many different topics through monthly surveys. We use this feedback to influence decisions by the University, inform our projects and empower students to create change for their community.

Student Journey Mapping

Over the course of the academic year 2022/23, we worked with a group of students to gain an insight into what a ‘typical’ academic year looks like. By exploring the highlights and lowlights of their university experience, we were able to identify the gaps in our current offerings and find ways to improve the overall student experience in collaboration with the University. Here are some of the research outcomes:

Providing detailed course information to undergraduates and postgraduates over the summer.
Making established communities easily accessible to incoming students.
Organising postgraduate-specific activities and networking events.
Making reading lists available during summer.
Creating an inclusive atmosphere for students observing Ramadan by offering spaces for prayer and ensuring that dining options are available before sunrise and after sunset.
