Sober Activities in Exeter

There is a common stereotype that the ‘university experience’ is founded on a strong drinking culture and that in order to have fun and fit in, you need to consume alcohol. And, whilst there are plenty opportunities to do this, it is simply not true that your social life is dependent on it. There are so many great ways to meet people and fun activities to get involved in that are completely sober! So, if you don’t drink alcohol, or if you’re simply looking for some wholesome days out then keep reading for 5 ways to have fun without alcohol.

  1. A relaxed café date is perfect for catching up with friends or taking a break from lectures. Luckily, Exeter is far from short of gorgeous, independent coffee shops so you can try a new place each time! 'The Sunset Society' is a personal favourite, and a popular spot amongst students. Located near to St James station, it offers a chill vibe, incredible latte art, and tasty snacks. When you’ve finished there, you can walk less than 10 minutes to the Odeon cinema and watch a film for just £5.50 or have a movie night at home and stock up on all your favourite sweet treats!

  1. If you’re searching for ways to meet new people in sober environments, then consider checking out what activities the Guild has on- often there will be craft events, board game evenings, therapy animals and more. These events are social, low-pressure, and a great way to meet people. Plus, you might leave with a plant, a piece of art, or a cool new skill.
  1. You could also try joining societies that focus on hobbies and interests rather than drinking socials: Exeter has a range of options, including ‘Expedition Soc’, ‘Art Soc’, ‘Sober Soc’ and ‘Body Soc’ to name a few. These are all open to students of any level and offer supportive, friendly environments, and socials that are typically held in the day and are alcohol- free.

  1. If fresh air and getting active is more your thing, Exeter’s surroundings make it easy to escape the city life and get outdoors. Dartmoor is just a short trip away, with a direct train to Okehampton station. Whether it’s a gentle walk or a more challenging hike, it’s perfect for clearing your head with miles of hiking trails and open moorlands. Or if you prefer the coast, Exmouth is ideal! Like Dartmoor, it is just a short, direct train ride from Exeter and you are at the beach. The coast stretches for miles so offers plenty of sand to walk along and there is also a selection of shops, cafes and restaurants parallel to the shore which you can indulge in!

  1. Exeter also has some incredible sports facilities so you could head to the gym, join a sports team, or try rock climbing at Boulderexe. Getting active is a great way to relieve stress, challenge yourself, and meet new people.

Whatever you prefer, there are lots of options available and things to do around Exeter that don’t require drinking!
