The Best Events in Exeter: A Student Guide

From outdoor festivals to formal balls, Exeter offers a calendar packed full of events which break up the term and make uni feel like more than just lectures and deadlines. If you’re figuring out what’s actually worth your time (and money), these are some of the Exeter events that myself, and my friends all agree are worth attending.

The Enchanted Garden Ball (EGB)

Each year, The Enchanted Garden Ball earns its reputation as the defining event for Exeter students. Held in the beautiful lakeside gardens of Shobrooke Park Country House just outside Exeter, this event offers everything from live music to fairground rides and food. It takes place at the end of the academic year so is usually accompanied by good weather and good vibes. It is a great way to celebrate the end of term with your friends and get some pictures together with the stunning scenery and immersive, magical setup. However, be aware that tickets sell out fast so make sure to be online when they drop!

Hijacked Festival

This festival brings big names in dance and electronic music to Devon for a day of fun, it’s the perfect excuse to get outside, enjoy some sunshine and dance with hundreds of fellow students to headline acts. Typically, Hijacked has been held at Double Locks but this year it will explore a new venue of Powderham castle however you don’t need to worry about finding transport there as there are a number of designated shuttle buses that take you to and from campus.

ExeFest

If live music, arts and society performances are your thing, ExeFest is the creative celebration you don’t want to miss. Run by the Students’ Guild, this on-campus arts festival usually takes place at the end of exams and showcases the best of student talent — from acoustic sessions and K-pop parties to band performances and theatre showcases. It’s a brilliant way to support societies, discover new artists and hang out with friends in a relaxed outdoor setting.

The Races

The Races are a staple student outing that blends tradition with a lively atmosphere. Even if racing isn’t your thing, for most students this day is less about the horses and more about the outfits, music, and the buzz from the crowd. Bring your friends, dress to impress, and enjoy a quintessentially British day out complete with champagne, sunshine and maybe even a cheeky bet.

Society Balls & End-of-Season Parties

Across the academic year, societies throw some of the most memorable nights of all — end-of-season balls, themed formal dinners and charity parties. These are a great opportunity to dress up, eat some delicious food (much more tasty than the pesto pasta you’ve been living on) and just spend some quality time with your friends. It is a nice way to reward yourself for all your hard work throughout the year and take a moment to appreciate everything you’ve achieved.
