Seen all the buzz around graduation this month? Is it you next year? I have put together a survival guide for graduation, if like me, you like to have a plan or want to know more information or advice!

1.     Order and collect your robe in plenty of time

You need to know your head size and robe length, and it can be ordered from the graduation website through the external partnership of the uni. Robes can be hired for the day, longer, or bought and includes a cap and gown. I had the option of collecting my gap and gown the evening before my morning ceremony which meant I was able to get completely ready at home before my graduation. And, make sure your hat is pulled down firmly before you walk the stage. Don’t forget to hand back hired gowns on time.

2.     Arrive at your ceremony in plenty of time

Graduations tend to start going in half an hour before so make sure you are there. I would recommend that if you would like a headshot photo from the external company, to go before your ceremony to avoid massive queues. You can bring in water and items but might be best leaving large items with a friend/family member.

3.     Keep your friends/ family close by

In amongst the crowds, it’s really easy for someone to wander off and get swept away and then they aren’t around for that perfect photo opportunity! Keep an eye on who is about and snap those photos before people head off to their various plans.

4.     Have a list of your photo locations that you want to hit

In the buzz of the day, you might miss that spot you wanted to get a photo. Some recommendations are in front of academic buildings, Reed Hall Gardens, The Exeter Rock, outside The Great Hall, in The Forum, in the Guild, by any halls of residence you stayed in. A designated person to take photos for you whether a friend or a family member is a great help to snap those moments and get moving to the next. For walking from spot to spot I highly recommend bringing a change of shoes that won’t give you blisters/sore feet.

5.     Plan those celebrations

Want to hit up your favourite place after the ceremony? Avoid disappointment by booking it in early so you and your loved ones can enjoy great food. Ask around and see what everyone is up to and if there are any celebrations you might like to join! Club tickets are pretty easy to get during graduation week, particularly the early entry, as a lot of students have left by that point.

6.     Pick up some Uni stash

The Market Place in the Forum and next to the Sanctuary sell lots of different Uni stash from pyjamas to sweatshirts, bobble hats to cufflinks- grab yourself a memento before you head off!

Finally, Con-grad-ulations!
