Starting university is exciting, slightly terrifying, and guaranteed to involve getting lost at least once. Whether you're moving to another country or just down the road, here's a survival guide to help you make the most of your first few weeks at the University of Exeter.
1. Download FIXR Before You Even Arrive
This is probably the most important practical tip you'll receive. Download the FIXR app as soon as possible. Most student events, club nights, and society socials use FIXR for ticket sales. In particular, you'll need it for Timepiece tickets (known simply as "TP" by students). Timepiece is one of the city's most popular clubs and a staple of Exeter nightlife. Tickets often sell out quickly, especially during Freshers' Week, so having FIXR set up in advance can save you from serious FOMO.
2. Join a Society (Even if You're Unsure)
One of the easiest ways to meet people is through societies. Exeter has hundreds of options, from sports clubs and performing arts groups to academic societies, volunteering projects, and niche hobbies. Even if you've never tried something before, Welcome Week is the perfect time to give it a go as the taster sessions are free and everyone at these events is also new! Sign up for a few taster sessions and see what sticks. Many students find their closest friends through societies, not just their courses.
3. Don't Stress About Finding Your Best Friends Immediately
Social media can make it seem like everyone becomes best friends on day one. The reality is that friendships develop over time. You might click instantly with your flatmates, or you might find your people through societies, lectures, part-time jobs, or random nights out. Give yourself time and don't compare your experience to anyone else's.
4. Learn the Campus Hills Early
Exeter's Streatham Campus is beautiful, but it's definitely not flat. The hills can be a shock during your first week. Comfortable shoes are essential, and after a few weeks, you'll find yourself walking routes that seemed impossible when you first arrived. Consider it free exercise.
5. Attend Societies Fairs
Even if crowds aren't your thing, Societies Fairs are worth attending. You'll discover societies you never knew existed, collect more free pens than you'll ever need, and get a good feel for student life at Exeter. It's also a great opportunity to sign up for mailing lists and find activities that interest you.
6. Budget Better Than You Think You Need To
Student finance can feel like an endless amount of money when it first arrives. It isn't. Track your spending during the first few weeks, especially when buying event tickets, takeaways, and textbooks. Future-you will be grateful when everyone else is living on instant noodles in November.
7. Say Yes (Within Reason)
The first few weeks are full of opportunities. Go to the quiz night. Join the society social. Grab coffee with your course mates. Attend the event that sounds vaguely interesting. You don't need to do everything, but being open to new experiences can make your transition to university much smoother.
8. Remember: Everyone Is New Too
At times it can feel like everyone else has everything figured out. News flash: they don't. Most freshers are feeling exactly the same mix of excitement and nerves. The first few weeks are a learning curve for everyone, so don't be afraid to introduce yourself, ask questions, or get involved.
University goes by surprisingly quickly. Make the most of Freshers' Week, try new things, and don't worry if everything doesn't fall into place immediately. Before long, you’ll find yourself in second year!
