If you had told me a few months ago that I'd be standing inside the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva, I probably wouldn't have believed you. Yet in July, I found myself visiting UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, the United Nations, the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNITAR in Geneva as part of the UNITAR Global Leaders Experience. Looking back, it's incredible to think that it all started with one application.

‍

When I first came across the opportunity through the University of Exeter, I nearly scrolled straight past it. It sounded like the kind of programme that hundreds of students would apply for, and I assumed my chances of being selected were slim. But I decided to apply anyway. I had nothing to lose.

‍

Before I knew it, I had been invited to an assessment centre. Although I still wasn't convinced I'd be successful, I threw myself into the group exercises, discussions and interviews. A few weeks later, I found an acceptance letter had landed in my inbox- completely unexpectedly. It was a reminder that the only guaranteed way to miss an opportunity is not to apply in the first place.

‍

The week itself exceeded every expectation. Alongside students from across the world, I stepped into the role of a diplomat, taking part in realistic negotiation simulations where we worked to reach consensus on complex global issues. I challenged myself through public speaking exercises, collaborated with people from different cultures and perspectives, and took part in workshops focused on leadership, communication and career development.

‍

One of the highlights was visiting UNESCO Headquarters in Paris before travelling to Geneva to explore the United Nations, the World Health Organization and UNITAR. Hearing directly from experts working within these organisations gave us a fascinating insight into international diplomacy, global health, sustainable development and the career paths available within the UN system. It was inspiring to ask questions, learn from their experiences and see first-hand where decisions that shape our world are made.

‍

As valuable as the workshops were, the people made the experience unforgettable. Meeting students from around the globe challenged my perspective and showed me how much can be achieved when people with different backgrounds work together towards a shared goal.

‍

Looking back, the biggest lesson wasn't just what I learnedabout diplomacy—it was the importance of saying yes to opportunities. It's easyto assume someone else is more qualified or more deserving, but if you neverapply, you'll never know where that opportunity could lead.

‍

University is full of opportunities that can shape your future in ways you don't expect. So apply for the placement, the internship, the society role or the programme that feels just out of reach. The worst that can happen is that you don't get it. The best? You might just find yourself representing Exeter on an international stage.
