The cost of living and accommodation challenges mean that more students than ever are commuting to campus. Whether this has always been your plan, or you're travelling in because your accommodation situation hasn't worked out as expected, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved, make connections and feel part of the Exeter community during Welcome Week.

Commuting might not be the start to university that some students imagined, but it certainly doesn't mean missing out. Many Welcome Week events take place during the day, there are dedicated opportunities to meet other commuter students, and there are lots of ways to build a university experience that works for you.

From societies and communities to support services and social events, here are some of the things you won't want to miss during Welcome Week.

1. Meet Other Commuter Students

One of the best things you can do during your first few weeks is connect with students who understand the realities of commuting to campus.

Join our Commuter Student Mixers on 16 September and 30 September to meet other students, share experiences and build a support network that fits around your routine.

2. Explore Welcome Week Events

Welcome Week is packed with opportunities to try something new, meet people and discover what's available to you as a student.

Most Guild events and society taster sessions take place between 09:00 and 17:00, making them easier to attend around travel commitments.

Check out the full programme and pick out the events that work best for your schedule.

3. Visit the Societies Fair

With more than 200 societies to choose from, the Societies Fairs are one of the biggest Welcome Week highlights.

Whether you're interested in sport, culture, gaming, sustainability, music or something completely different, you'll be able to meet students, ask questions and find out about upcoming events.

Tuesday: Societies Fair Pt 2

Wednesday: AU Clubs and Active Societies Fair

4. Find Your Community

University is about more than your course. Building connections with people who share your experiences, interests or identity can make a huge difference to how settled you feel.

Our Communities are designed to help you find your people and create a sense of belonging at Exeter from day one.

"Meeting people on my course who I can be with betweenlectures gives me confidence to relax and go to places on campus I wouldn'thave alone." MA Commuter Student

5. Discover Your Go-To Campus Spaces

When you have a gap between lectures, it helps to know where you can relax, study or catch up with friends.

Devonshire House offers both social and study space, while across campus you'll find silent study areas, group-work spaces and informal places to spend time between classes. Taking time during Welcome Week to find a few favourite spots can make your days on campus much more comfortable.

6. Know Where to Get Affordable Food and Drinks

Long days on campus are much easier when you've got affordable food options sorted.

There are plenty of places to buy food across campus, and Devonshire House has microwaves and hot water taps so you can heat up lunch from home and make hot drinks. If you're looking to keep costs down, check out our student guide to affordable eating on campus.

7. Find Spaces for Reflection and Faith

If faith, prayer or quiet reflection is an important part ofyour routine, make sure you visit the Multifaith Centre next to the Forum.

It's a welcoming space to pause, reflect and recharge during a busy day on campus.

8. Save Money on Your Journey

If you're commuting regularly, now is a great time to look into travel discounts.

A little planning at the start of term could save you money throughout the year.

Remember: You're Not Missing Out

Your university experience doesn't have to look the same as everyone else's to be rewarding. Whether you're commuting by choice, because of accommodation issues, or because it makes the most financial sense right now, there are lots of ways to build friendships, get involved and make Exeter feel like home.

Welcome Week is all about finding what works for you, so make the most of the opportunities available and don't be afraid to take things at your own pace.
