Yesterday, the University of Exeter announced that it’s begun consulting with academic staff and trade unions about proposed reductions to staffing and resourcing in its faculties. We want to explain what this means for you and how your Guild is representing you throughout this process.
We want to reassure you that we are here for you and there are ways you can engage with us throughout this difficult time. We, as your Students’ Guild, are independent from the University- our role is to advocate on behalf of students and provide you with independent advice. For us, maintaining and advocating for a great student experience remains our top priority.
What We Know
Whilst we won’t know what the full implications of the proposals will be until the consultation process concludes, there are some things we do know at this time:
• The University has begun consulting academic staff and their trade unions. The proposals include reducing the number of academic staff roles in some parts of the faculties.
• The University is not proposing closing any departments.
• The University has committed that your taught course or research programme will continue through to your completion.
• Nothing is happening immediately. The process of consultation will continue throughout the summer.
• You will know if any optional modules on your course are impacted from September via your Hubs; core modules are protected.
You can read more information including FAQs on the University website.
Representing You
Your elected Officers are here to advocate and amplify your voices in the highest University decision-making meetings. We will do everything within our power, as we always do, to have your back and represent students.
We’ve been recently involved in meetings of Senate and Council (which are the highest levels of decision-making in the University) advocating for protecting student experience throughout this process. We will be continuing to represent you in future meetings to ensure that the University hears what students are worried about and what you may need more information about. We will also be working with our incoming Officers and Reps to ensure that you are also represented on course and department levels too.
We want to hear your thoughts or worries, we are gathering feedback using this form. By providing us with your feedback, we - as your independent and recognised representative body- will be more equipped to represent you in meetings with the University.
Academic Advice
Our Advice team are completely independent from the University, so we are able to provide you with impartial advice and support on academic matters. Once there is more information on how changes might impact you as a student, you may wish to speak to one of our Advisors who can help you navigate your issue or concern.
What’s Next
The University have released a webpage which they will be updating with FAQs and further information when they have updates.
The University have also shared an email address that you can contact with your questions: studentquestions@exeter.ac.uk. We know this announcement will affect all students in different ways. If you need someone to talk to, you are not alone, you can access the University’s Wellbeing Services if you need any wellbeing support.
We will continue to represent you and put your interests first, if you need any support or advice, or want to ensure your voice is heard, please do reach out.
