Societies and clubs are one of the best parts of uni life. They’re student-led communities built around shared interests - whether that’s a sport, a hobby, a cultural background, a cause, or something super niche like…Hide and Seek (yep, that’s a real one).

At Exeter, we’ve got over 200 student groups you can join - and trust me, there really is something for everyone. Some are all about fun (think baking, film nights, or hikes), others are academic or career-focused, and some centre around activism, culture, sport, or wellbeing. Whatever you're into, there’s a society or club for you.

You can browse everything on our website. Or, if you’re around in September, come along to Welcome Week (also known as Freshers' Week) — loads of groups will be there to say hi, hand out freebies, and help you sign up (no awkward convos required).

AU Clubs & Social Sport: Find Your Fit

Whether you're a seasoned athlete or just looking to try something new, Exeter has loads of options for sports.

Athletic Union (AU) Clubs are Exeter’s competitive sports teams. With over 50 clubs, from rugby and hockey to ultimate frisbee and swimming, there’s something for everyone. Most AU clubs train regularly and compete in leagues like BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport). It’s a great way to stay active, build your skills, and be part of a close-knit team.

Want something more relaxed? Social Sport is all about fun, flexible sessions —no try-outs, no pressure. You can join in through Social Sport Leagues or Pitch Up and Play, both great for meeting new people and staying active on your own terms.

Volunteering & Campaigning: Make a Difference

If you’re passionate about giving back or standing up for what you believe in, volunteering and campaigning groups are a great place to start.

  • Raise and Give (RAG) is the student fundraising group. In one year alone, students raised over £250,000 for local, national and international charities through treks, marathons, and creative fundraising events.
  • Be the Change and many others give you the chance to campaign for sustainability, social justice and making change

Whatever you're passionate about, there’s a group of students here who feel the same — and they’d love for you to get involved.
